Spaces: In The Pink In Tobin Hill Saturday, 26 September 2009 03:27 To say the neighbors were shocked when Luis Lopez painted his new house pink would be an understatement. But over the years, the bold color has grown on them and La Casa Rosa has become a Tobin Hill landmark. Lopez, an artist, and his partner, Margaret Halsema, an educational program coordinator, were looking for a building for his studio in 2002. When they weren't able to find one, she suggested that they build something new on a vacant lot on East Dewey, where the previous house had been lost to a fire.
Hot (Spot) to Trot Wednesday, 15 July 2009 03:27 Before I delve into the details of my lunch trip to Hot Spot BBQ — the seven-year-old establishment on North St. Mary’s, just past the Josephine intersection — I’ll see if I can’t expedite this process for the barbecue fundamentalists: The lamb ribs are falling off the bone. The brisket in the Hots Po’Boy is pull-apart tender and not at all dry — thank God, because it’s stuffed full and ladled with sauce, and if I had to wrangle it with my teeth, it’d be a mess. (As it is, I’m afraid my vegetarian coworker will walk in while I’m eating and be scarred for life.)
Art Opening: Unexpected Monday, 01 February 2010 21:11 Critic's Pick - Art opening: Unexpected Unlike some exhibition titles, “Unexpected” describes photographer Rodolfo Choperena’s work perfectly. In a medium chock-full of happy accidents, Choperena happened upon his show concept while experimenting with his iPhone’s camera while visiting Croatia.
